S1E3 From Notebook to Published
You’ve got something written down somewhere. A notebook. A phone note. An idea God gave you. It might not even be about writing at all. This episode is about moving it from where it’s sitting into where it belongs. I want to say this up front, because I say it every episode and I mean it every time: my main focus is publishing and writing, because that’s the assignment God gave me. But this truth doesn’t just belong to writers. It belongs to anybody who’s ever been given something by God and didn’t know what to do with it next.

Notebook to Published, Whatever That Means for You
Today we’re talking about something that keeps a lot of people stuck for years, because I know it did for me — moving from notebook to published. I’ll talk about it through the lens of writing, because that’s what I know best, but I want you to translate it as we go. Every time I say book, swap in whatever your version of that is. Because almost everybody listening has something written down somewhere — in a notebook, a planner, phone notes, a plan you meant to carry out. Most people have something that started but never finished.
So when we talk about moving from notebook to published, we’re really talking about something bigger — moving from vision to action, from ideas to execution, from thinking about it to actually doing it. Publishing is just one example of what obedience looks like. Your assignment might not look anything like mine, but the pattern is the same. The assignment is different for everybody. The process is not.
Waiting for the Wind to Settle
I’ve always been a note taker — notebooks going back years, notes in my phone, notes on paper, ideas everywhere. But before I ever published a single book, I had pages and pages of things God had shown me that stayed exactly where they were. Written down but not developed. Started but not finished.
Vision usually shows up before structure. Ideas come before systems. Inspiration comes before discipline. But eventually there has to be a shift, because ideas are not impact. Intentions are not impact. Finished work is impact — whatever finished looks like for you.
Ecclesiastes 11:4 says it plainly: he that observeth the wind shall not sow, and he that regardeth the cloud shall not reap. If you wait for everything to be just right, nothing ever gets planted. I was one of the people waiting — waiting for more confidence, more knowledge, more stability, more time. But obedience rarely happens under perfect conditions.
Write It, Make It Plain
This is where Habakkuk 2:2 becomes practical — the foundational scripture for everything Faith Pages Publishing is built on. Write the vision and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it.
That scripture gives two instructions. Write — meaning get it out of your head and into a form you can actually work with. And make it plain — meaning clear, organized, structured, understandable. Vision becomes powerful when it becomes clear, no matter what that vision is for. Some people need to write it in a manuscript, like me. Some people just need to write it so they can finally make a decision they’ve been avoiding.
And here’s something people get backwards — they think they need to know everything before they start. But Proverbs 16:9 says a man’s heart deviseth his way, but the Lord directeth his steps. God directs steps, not hesitation. Movement invites direction. Action invites clarity. Obedience invites guidance.
Small Things Still Count
Another reason people stay stuck in the notebook stage is they underestimate the power of small progress. They think, I can’t do a lot, so there’s no point starting. But Zechariah 4:10 asks, who hath despised the day of small things? Small beginnings matter. One page matters. One conversation matters. One decision matters.
You don’t build anything all at once — you build it piece by piece. A book becomes chapters. Chapters become pages. And Galatians 6:9 — one of my favorite scriptures, honestly, the one that got me through a lot of tough seasons — says let us not be weary in well-doing, for in due season we shall reap if we faint not. Consistency produces harvest, no matter what field you’re planting in.
Four steps that apply no matter what you’re building:
• Get the vision out of your head and into one place — not five notebooks, just one
• Create a simple outline or plan, and it doesn’t have to be perfect
• Stay consistent, because even small progress adds up over time
• Finish something — not everything, something — because finishing builds confidence, and unfinished work builds frustration
The Takeaway
Vision that never becomes action never becomes impact.
